Reports To: Executive Director
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (24 hours/week)
Compensation: $17.00–$19.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Position Summary

The Bemidji Community Food Shelf is committed to providing nutritious food and compassionate service to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Every member of our team contributes to creating a respectful and welcoming environment for the community we serve.

The Facilities & Maintenance Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming environment for food shelf customers, volunteers, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine custodial duties, assists with basic building maintenance, and helps ensure the Bemidji Community Food Shelf operates safely and efficiently. Because this role interacts regularly with customers, volunteers, and community members, the successful candidate must treat everyone with dignity, respect, and compassion while helping create a welcoming atmosphere.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Facility Cleaning & Sanitation

    • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and welcoming environment throughout the facility.

    • Clean and disinfect offices, warehouse, and other common areas, including bathrooms.

    • Empty trash and recycling.

    • Respond promptly to spills and cleaning needs.

    • Complete routine and deep cleaning according to established schedules.

  • Building Maintenance

    • Perform routine building inspections to identify maintenance and safety concerns.

    • Complete preventative maintenance and minor facility repairs.

    • Coordinate pest control and report maintenance issues.

    • Maintain cleaning and maintenance supplies.

    • Assist with seasonal building and grounds maintenance.

  • Warehouse & Operational Support

    • Maintain clean and organized warehouse, storage, cooler, and freezer areas.

    • Support composting, recycling, and waste management.

    • Assist with facility improvement projects as assigned.

  • Facility Security

    • Complete building closing procedures.

    • Ensure the building, equipment, and grounds are secure.

    • Report safety, security, or maintenance concerns.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

  • Ability to communicate professionally and work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, customers, and community members.

  • Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain confidentiality when appropriate.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in custodial, janitorial, facilities, or building maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning methods, building maintenance, and safe use of cleaning products and equipment.

  • Experience operating cleaning equipment or performing minor facility repairs.

  • Experience operating small material handling equipment, such as a walk-behind forklift or pallet jack

Physical Requirements

 
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach throughout the workday.

  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to push, pull, and move carts and cleaning equipment.

  • Ability to work in warehouse, cooler, freezer, and outdoor environments as needed.



 

Work Environment

This position works throughout the Bemidji Community Food Shelf, including offices, customer areas, warehouse, storage areas, coolers, freezers, and outdoor spaces. The role requires frequent interaction with staff, volunteers, and community members while maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.
